Drop Everything and Read (DEAR)

(Category: Literacy)
This is a great way of promoting reading across the whole school or year group. The idea is that at a set time everyday for a week everyone stops what they are doing and reads for fifteen minutes. It is a shared experience, gets people talking about books and reading while conveying a strong message that the school believes in reading. Students read, principals read, teachers in the staff room read, phones are taken off the hook and secretaries read, the caretaker reads and visitors to the school are offered books or magazines to look through. This initiative can be used to organise boxes of books, magazines and newspapers per class as well as one for the staff room and office.

Instructions

• The funding is available for schools to promote reading across the whole school or year group.
• The idea is that at a set time everyday for a week everyone stops what they are doing and reads for fifteen minutes, further details enclosed.
• This initiative can be used to organise boxes of books, magazines, and newspapers per class, as well as one for the staffroom and office. Please consult your copy of Time to Read, Quinn & Somers (2007), a JCSP production.
• Please enclose in your evaluation a detailed description of the activities undertaken in the running of the initiative along with any relevant photographs of the activities undertaken. We would be very grateful if the photos are sent to us digitally as the quality is great for publications. Please make sure that you have sought permission from parents/guardians to use the photos in publications. Some schools write to all parents asking them to make contact with the school if they object to photos being published.
• The evaluation should be submitted online at www.jcsp.ie. More details below.
