Who Wants to be a Word Millionaire?

This is a short-term reading intervention which challenges a class group of JCSP students to engage in recreational reading, at home with the support of their parents, and to collectively read a total of one million words over a six-week period. The following support materials are provided to schools: teacher guidelines, "Who Wants to be a Millionaire "achievement certificates and "Who Wants to be Word Millionaire" wall charts for entering and tracking the cumulative totals of words read to date. Students are afforded an opportunity to complete statements CC53 and 54 in conjunction with this initiative.

Instructions

• The funding is available for schools to organise the short term reading intervention - "Who Wants to be a Word Millionaire?”
• The following support materials will be sent to schools: “Who Wants to be a Word Millionaire?” teacher guidelines, achievement certificates, bookmarks, advertising poster, tracking posters (Trend Graph and Thermometer) for entering the cumulative totals of words read to date. Also please consult your copy of Time to Read, Quinn & Somers (2007), a JCSP production, for titles of popular teenage literature.
• Please enclose in your evaluation a detailed description of the activities undertaken in the running of the initiative along with any relevant photographs of the activities undertaken. We would be very grateful if the photos are sent to us digitally as the quality is great for publications. Please make sure that you have sought permission from parents/guardians to use the photos in publications. Some schools write to all parents asking them to make contact with the school if they object to photos being published.
