SL1019: Genetics; from classroom to farmyard

Course Aims
Learning Outcomes:
Participants who complete this course should be able to:

• Develop an understanding of the scientific facts and prin¬ciples of genetics in agricultural science and biology.
• Understand the scientific principles of animal breeding.
• Develop an appreciation for how the application of science and technology may be beneficial to agricultural science.
• Develop an appreciation that the knowledge of genetics in Irish agricultural systems has led to improvement in livestock production and health.

Course Description:
This workshop will incorporate many Problem Based Learning activities which the participants will carry out in groups. All these activities will be based on the current agricultural science and biology syllabus.

The teachers will be provided with different teaching resources (pictures, video clips), worksheets and activities that can be incorporated into their lessons to help them teach this subject area in an easily understandable manner, relating theory to modern practices and developments in agriculture and research in agricultural science.
