HIST0902: Developing Students' Critical Thinking Skills through the Sunningdale Case Study
Target Group
Teachers of Leaving Certificate History (later modern field of study) for whose students the topic prescribed for documents-based study in 2010 and 2011 examinations is 'Politics and Society in Northern Ireland, 1949-1993'. One of the three Case Studies for the topic is 'The Sunningdale Agreement and the power-sharing executive, 1973-1974'.
Course Aims
The course aims to assist teachers in preparing their students for the demands of the documents-based question on the prescribed topic. The approach will reflect the syllabus focus on enquiry and evidence and will explore some of the means by which critical thinking skills are developed in the History classroom. Exemplar examination questions on the Case Study will also be considered.
